Information About the Aegean & Sporades Islands Museums
The Archaeological museum of Skyros consists of two halls with ten showcases displaying findings from all the historical periods of the island. Ceramic findings from 2900 B.C., from the Mycenaean period, from the protogeometric period and up to 7th century B.C. are included in the collection. The majority comes from the regions of Themis, Magazia, Agalini, Apatsini, St. Anna.
The Folklore Museum of the island was built a short time ago in the capital of the island. The museum includes many interesting collections and items from different ages, and helps the visitor to learn about the history, the culture and the tradition of the island.
The museum is located in the capital of Thassos, Limena. It is built near to the ancient Agora. In the museum there are collections of archeological exhibits from the 7th century B.C. until the 7th century B.C.
It is considered to be one of the most important provincial museums in Greece. Important exhibits from the Paleolithic until the Romaic period narrate one of the most significant civilizations of the Aegean. In the entrance of the museum there is the extremely tall Kouros that was intended for the temple of Apollo. Also the visitor can see the different ways of the residents life, during different periods of history and admire the civilization of the first inhabitants of the island. There is also some beautiful jewellery of prehistoric times, while the history of the ancient Olympic champion Theageni, describe the legend and the origin of the Olympic Games.
The Archaeological Museum of Limnos opened in 1961. It is a three-storey building located on the Romean shore, near the high school. It includes the finds of the Italian Archaeological School in Poliochni, Kaviria and Hefestia, finds excavated in Myrina and other diverse findings from all over the island. The objects are exhibited in chronological order, following the island's history. The visitor enters directly into the ground floor chamber where prehistoric Limnos is on exhibit.
Finds from Poliochni, known as Mauri up to the Ionian period, a variety of artefacts from Myrina from the early Copper Age, objects from the early ages when the island was settled, samples of pottery from Koukonissi, and many others.
