About Arta
Arta is the prefecture in the south of Epirus, stretching from the shores of the Ambracian Gulf through fertile citrus groves to the high Tzoumerka mountains. Its capital, Arta, is one of the oldest towns in Greece, built on the site of ancient Ambracia, the capital of King Pyrrhus, and later the seat of the Byzantine Despotate of Epirus in the thirteenth century. From that golden age it keeps remarkable Byzantine churches, above all the Panagia Parigoritissa, a massive, richly decorated church that looks almost like a palace, along with a medieval castle above the river. Arta's most famous landmark is its stone bridge over the Arachthos, an elegant arched bridge of the seventeenth century linked to a well-known Greek folk song and legend, according to which the master builder had to sacrifice his wife in its foundations for it to stand. To the south, the wetlands of the Ambracian Gulf form a protected area rich in birdlife and fish, where lagoons and reed beds stretch to the sea. In the north-east, the Tzoumerka mountains offer stone villages, waterfalls, monasteries and gorges, as well as rafting and canyoning on the Arachthos. Arta suits road-trippers, history lovers and nature lovers seeking quiet, authentic Greece.

Getting to & around Arta
By air
Preveza (Aktion) Airport, with many summer flights from Europe and flights from Athens, is about 45 minutes from Arta, and Ioannina airport, with flights from Athens, about an hour via the Ionia Odos motorway.
By ferry
Arta is inland, with no ferries. Igoumenitsa, about an hour and a quarter north, has ferries to Corfu, Paxos and Italy, and Lefkada, about an hour south-west by road, has summer boats to Meganisi, Kefalonia and Ithaca.
Getting around
Essential. Arta’s famous old bridge and Byzantine churches are in town, but the Tzoumerka villages, waterfalls and gorges, and the Amvrakikos wetlands are spread out, with very few buses. A car is the practical choice.
