Information About Laconia Museums
It is the first museum built in the prefecture. It comprises of 6 halls and a lobby that exhibit findings from the two sacred temples of Orthia Artemida and Chalkiikou Athena from the excavations of Amyklaiou, frescoes from the ancient city of Sparta probably from the mansions of the lords from the Hellenistic and Roman era. There are also 2 halls with sculptures that include part of a statue of a warrior known as Leonidas.
The Archeological Museum of Mystras is housed in a 2-storey building in the west wing of the north courtyard of the cathedral of Agios Dimitrios Mystra. It was founded in 1951 and its collection includes sculptures, ceramics, coins, frescoes as well as Byzantine icons and fabrics.
It is an exhibition of archeological findings from excavations made in the Monemvasia area and contain findings from the old Christian years up until the Turkish occupation. The Collection of Monemvasia is housed in a restored building which was originally built as a mosque during the Turkish occupation and was transformed into a public building during the 2nd Venetian Occupation (1690-1713). It was later used a prison and after the Revolution as a cafeteria.
This is a unique museum in Greece and of its kind. It offers a journey into the history of the olive trees and olive oil production in Greece from the ancient past into the present. With the help of precise replicas and mobile models the visitor experiences the evolution of oil production from the prehistoric ages to the 20th century and can participate is the procedure of oil making in the ancient oil press.
