Agistri is a small, green island just west of Aegina, covered with pine forests that come right down to the edge of the sea, and one of the easiest island escapes from Athens, reachable by boat from Piraeus in about an hour. Despite its proximity to the capital, it has kept a relaxed, simple atmosphere, with no large hotels and a handful of villages connected by a single road. Skala, the main resort, has a sandy beach in front of a large white church, small hotels, cafés and tavernas. Megalochori, also called Mylos, is the old harbour village, with traditional houses climbing the hillside, while Metochi lies higher up among the pines and Limenaria, in the south, is a quiet farming village. The island's beaches are its main attraction: Dragonera, a pebble cove backed by pine trees on the west coast, Chalikiada, below dramatic cliffs and reached by a path, and Aponisos, where a narrow channel separates the island from a small islet, with clear turquoise water. Agistri is ideal for walking and cycling along its forest roads and for snorkelling in its clear waters. It suits couples, families, campers and anyone who wants a quiet island break close to Athens, especially in spring and early summer.

By ferry
Agistri has direct ferries and fast boats from Piraeus, about one to one and a half hours, and frequent small boats from Aegina Town, about 15 minutes. Most boats arrive at Skala or Megalochori (Mylos).
Getting around
Not needed. Agistri is small and green, and you can walk or cycle between Skala, Megalochori and Limenaria; a local bus and a few taxis cover the rest. Scooters and bicycles are easy to rent, and visitors cannot bring cars over in summer.
