Methana is a volcanic peninsula in the Saronic Gulf, attached to the north-eastern Peloponnese by a narrow isthmus, so that it feels like an island while being reachable by road. Its landscape was shaped by dozens of volcanic domes and lava flows, and ancient writers such as Strabo and Pausanias described an eruption here in the third century BC. Today Methana is one of the quietest corners of the Saronic, known for its thermal springs and its walking trails. The small spa town of Methana, on the east coast, grew around its sulphur-rich hot springs, whose waters have been used for therapeutic baths since the nineteenth century and still give the seafront a distinctive smell. Above the village of Kameni Chora, in the north-west, a marked path leads up to the most recent volcanic crater, through black lava rocks and pine trees, with views over the Saronic Gulf and Aegina. Other villages, such as Vathy, with its small fishing harbour and fish tavernas, and Agios Georgios, are peaceful and traditional, surrounded by terraces, olive groves and chestnut trees in the higher areas. Methana is reached by ferry from Piraeus or by road from Troizinia and Galatas, and suits walkers, spa-goers and travellers seeking calm, unusual landscapes.

By ferry
Methana is a volcanic peninsula linked to the Peloponnese by a narrow isthmus. Ferries from Piraeus call at Methana town, about one and a half hours, via Aegina, on the way to Poros, and it is about two and a half hours from Athens by road.
Getting around
Recommended. Methana town, with its thermal springs, is walkable, but the volcano trail, the stone villages and the coast are spread out and have few buses. A car, which you can drive in from the mainland, makes exploring easy.
