Koufonisia are a pair of tiny islands in the Small Cyclades, between Naxos and Amorgos, famous for some of the most turquoise water in Greece. Only Ano Koufonisi, the smaller of the two, has a permanent population and almost all the accommodation, tavernas and shops, gathered in and around the pretty fishing village of Chora with its windmill, white houses and little harbour full of colourful boats. The island is flat and small enough to explore entirely on foot or by bicycle, and a coastal path leads east past a series of sandy beaches, each more beautiful than the last: Finikas, Fanos, Italida, Platia Pounta and finally Pori, a wide bay of white sand. Along the way are sculpted rocks, sea caves and natural pools such as the Piscina, where swimmers dive into clear green-blue water. A small boat crosses daily to Kato Koufonisi, which is uninhabited apart from a taverna and a chapel, and has wild, quiet beaches. Koufonisia have become popular with young Greek and international travellers who appreciate a relaxed, barefoot atmosphere. They are reached by ferry from Piraeus or from Naxos, and are best visited between June and September.

By air
Koufonisia has no airport. The nearest is on Naxos, with flights from Athens, while Santorini and Mykonos have many summer flights from Europe; from Naxos, the local ferry and fast boats reach the island in about one to two hours.
By ferry
Koufonisia is on the Small Cyclades line: the local ferry links it with Naxos, Amorgos and the other small islands most days, and in summer fast boats and ferries from Piraeus also call. Check schedules, as connections are limited and depend on the weather.
Getting around
Not needed. Koufonisia is small, and you can walk between the port, the village and most beaches, or use local boats and the occasional minibus. There is little or no car rental.
