Meganisi is a small, green island just off the east coast of Lefkada, a short ferry ride from Nydri, and one of the best-kept secrets of the Ionian Sea. Its coastline is deeply indented with sheltered bays and coves of clear, emerald water, which makes it a favourite with sailors and yachts exploring the so-called inland sea between Lefkada and the mainland. The island has three small villages. Spartochori, perched on a hill above the harbour of Porto Spilia, is a pretty village of whitewashed houses, bougainvillea and narrow lanes with views over the sea towards Skorpios. Katomeri, the main village, lies inland, while Vathy, on a long fjord-like bay, has a small port, tavernas and a relaxed atmosphere. The coast is dotted with small beaches, such as Agios Ioannis, Pasoumaki and Fanari, and with sea caves, the most famous being the Papanikolis Cave, where according to tradition a Greek submarine hid during the Second World War. Life on Meganisi is quiet, centred on fishing, olive groves and the evening meal by the water. It is reached by small ferry from Nydri on Lefkada, and is ideal for couples, families, sailors and anyone seeking a peaceful day trip or a calm holiday.

By air
Meganisi has no airport. The nearest is Preveza (Aktion), about 50 minutes’ drive to Nidri on Lefkada, from where a short ferry crosses to the island in about 25 minutes. Preveza has many summer flights from Europe and flights from Athens.
By ferry
Ferries from Nidri on Lefkada reach Spartochori and Vathy several times a day, in about 25 to 40 minutes, and can carry cars. In summer, the island is also a stop on the many day cruises from Nidri.
Getting around
Not essential. Meganisi is small, with three villages linked by a short road and a local minibus. A scooter or bike is enough to reach the coves, though bringing a car on the ferry from Nidri is possible.
