Poros is a green, gentle island in the Saronic Gulf, separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow channel only a few hundred metres wide, so that from the waterfront it looks as if you could almost touch the mainland town of Galatas opposite. It actually consists of two islands joined by a short bridge: small, volcanic Sferia, where Poros Town is built, and large, pine-covered Kalavria, which makes up most of the island. Poros Town rises in an amphitheatre of white and pastel houses with tiled roofs up a hill crowned by a famous clock tower, built in 1927, from which there are lovely views over the channel and the boats passing through it. The waterfront is lined with cafés, tavernas and sailing yachts. On Kalavria, the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon stand in a pine forest; according to tradition, the orator Demosthenes took his own life here. The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi sits in a green valley near the sea, and small beaches such as Love Bay, Askeli and Kanali are surrounded by pines. Across the channel, the Lemon Forest of Galatas is worth a visit. Poros is about an hour from Piraeus by fast boat, and suits families, couples and sailors.

By air
Poros has no airport. Fly to Athens International Airport, with flights from across Europe all year, then take the metro, bus or a taxi to Piraeus, about an hour, for the boat.
By ferry
Fast boats and ferries from Piraeus reach Poros in about one to two and a half hours, via Aegina on the slower ferries. Poros is also only a few minutes across a narrow strait from Galatas on the Peloponnese, with small boats and a car ferry running all day.
Getting around
Not essential. Poros Town is walkable, a local bus runs along the coast to the beaches and the monastery, and taxis and scooters are easy to find. A car, brought over from Galatas, is useful for exploring the Peloponnese coast, such as Troizina and Methana.
