Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the Prefecture of Lassithi and is located on the north coast of Crete. The city is built around a picturesque lake leading to the Gulf of Mirambello. The city is built upon the ancient Dorian city of Lato, which was the seaport of Lato Eteras located close to the village of Kritsa.
In recent years Agios Nikolaos has become a cosmopolitan resort attracting visitors from all corners of the world.
Ierapetra is located 36 km south of Agios Nikolaos and is on the south coast overlooking the Libyan Sea and is nicknamed The Bride of Libya. It also has the honour of being the most southern town of Europe as it faces the African continent and has a mild climate with the temperature rarely falling below 12° C during the winter.
Today 's town is built on the ancient town of Ierapytnas that flourish in 2nd century BC. There are many monuments to see and beautiful beaches to relax on.
Sitia is built amphitheatrically around the bay of Sitia and is located 70 km from Agios Nikolaos. A pretty traditional town with many European Blue Flag awarded beaches. The area is also renowned for its locally produced wine.
Elounda has become one of the most cosmopolitan destinations in the country with its exclusive 5 star resorts on the Gulf of Mirambello and is 11 km from Agios Nikolaos. The area has scenery of contrasts, the wild rocky mountain backdrop leading to the peaceful blue lagoon with the islands of Spinalonga, Kolokitha and a scattering of smaller islets.
Elounda is built on the site of the ancient city of Olounta.
Palekastro is on the east coast of Crete, 19 km from Sitia and 90 km from Agios Nikolaos. In recent years it has seen a growth in visitors as it is close to the palm tree forest and beach of Vai.
Milatos is a traditional fishing village east of Mallia and 32 km from Agios Nikolaos. The village is built on the site of the ancient town of the same name. Close by is a cave with an underground cavern that is adorned with stalagmites and stalactites.
Kato Zakros is the seaport of the ancient town of Zakros and is located on the east coast of Crete, 20 km from Paleokastro.
The Minoan palace of Zakros was the fourth largest on the island. The discoveries found during excavations are exhibited in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
