Christmas in Greece: The most festive towns for a December trip
Discover the most festive Christmas destinations in Greece and plan your December escape
Christmas in Greece is less about snow and more about lit-up squares, busy markets and long family meals. Many towns decorate their streets from late November, and the season runs until Epiphany on 6 January. These five destinations offer different ways to enjoy the holidays.
Trikala: Greece’s biggest Christmas village
The Mill of the Elves usually runs from late November until Epiphany. Children can visit Santa’s house, watch chocolate being made and ride the fun park, while adults browse the Christmas stalls and local food. Away from the park, walk through the old Varousi quarter, climb to the castle with its clock tower and try the famous Trikala sausage. Meteora is less than half an hour away, so it is easy to add a day among the monasteries.
Where to stay: Aeton Melathron is a comfortable base for a festive family trip, while Ananti City Resort only 3km from the center also a great option.
Thessaloniki: Waterfront lights and festive food
Start at Aristotelous Square, where the city’s main tree and seasonal stalls set the mood. Walk the waterfront to the White Tower at sunset, then head into Ladadika or the Kapani market for food. Thessaloniki is known for its sweets, so leave room for bougatsa in the morning and a box of melomakarona to take home.
Where to stay: ON Residence , the Excelsior Small Luxury Hotels and Zenith Premium Suites put you within walking distance of Aristotelous Square and the waterfront. See all available hotels in Thessaloniki.
Athens: City lights under the Acropolis
The giant tree in Syntagma Square marks the start of the season, and the shopping streets around Ermou and Kolonaki fill with lights. Families can look out for the city’s Christmas events, which often include a festive village at Technopolis in Gazi. Mild winter days are also ideal for the Acropolis and Plaka without the summer crowds.
Where to stay: Electra Palace Athens , Electra Metropolis Athens, Hotel Grand Bretagne, the Zillers Athens Boutique Hotel, Athens Capital Hotel and Plaka Hotel are only a few options close to Syntagma and Plaka, so the lights and sights are on your doorstep. Search all Athens Hotels for more options to fit your budget.
Nafplio: A romantic Christmas by the sea
About two hours from Athens, Nafplio is an easy escape for couples. Wander the decorated lanes and Syntagma Square, walk the seafront to Arvanitia and look out at the Bourtzi fortress. Climb Palamidi on a clear day for views over the Argolic Gulf, then settle into a café or taverna in the old town.
Where to stay: Epoch House is a boutique adults only option directly on Nafplio's main square, while 3Sixty Hotel & Suites, Grand Sarai Nafplio, AETOMA Traditional Guest House and Castellano Hotel & Suites will ensure a lovely festive holiday. Search all hotels in Nafplio to see various options.
Kastoria: A lakeside town that saves its party for Epiphany
Kastoria’s mansions and Byzantine churches look especially atmospheric on a misty winter morning by Lake Orestiada. Spend Christmas walking the lakeside path and the Doltso quarter, or time your trip for 6–8 January. That is when the Ragoutsaria fills the streets with masked groups and brass bands, ending with the big Pateritsa parade on 8 January.
Where to stay: Limneon Resort and Spa offers lake views and easy access to the old town. If you prefer the historic Doltso neighbourhood Doltso Luxury Hotel, Orologopoulou Mansion and Hotel Bakaris offer the cosiest rooms for your winter stay. Check out all hotels in Kastoria and pick the ideal stay
Hotels in popular Christmas towns fill quickly, especially around Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and the Epiphany weekend, so book early. Check event dates shortly before you travel, as programmes are usually announced in November. Whichever town you choose, the lights, local sweets and long holiday meals make December one of the warmest times to visit Greece.
