About Boeotia

Boeotia is the prefecture north-west of Athens, a land of fertile plains and mountains rich in myth and history, best known to travellers today for the stylish mountain town of Arachova, one of Greece's most popular winter destinations. Perched on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, close to the Parnassos ski centre and just a few kilometres from Delphi, Arachova has stone houses, cobbled lanes, a clock tower above the town, and shops selling local woven rugs, cheeses and wine; on winter weekends it fills with Athenians heading for the slopes. Nearby, the Monastery of Hosios Loukas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the masterpieces of Byzantine architecture, with gleaming eleventh-century mosaics set in a peaceful landscape of olive groves. Thebes, the capital, was one of the most powerful cities of ancient Greece and the setting of the myths of Oedipus and Antigone; its archaeological museum is excellent. In Livadeia, the Krya springs, linked in antiquity to the oracle of Trophonios and the springs of Lethe and Mnemosyne, form a green oasis with old watermills below a medieval castle. Mount Helicon, home of the Muses, rises to the south, and the region also has a quiet coastline on the Gulf of Corinth. Boeotia suits winter travellers, couples and culture lovers.

plane

By air

Athens International Airport, with flights from across Europe all year, is about an hour from Thebes and two to two and a half hours from Arachova and Distomo.

ferry

By ferry

Boeotia has no island ferries. Piraeus is about one and a half to two hours away, and Chalkida, for Evia, about an hour; on the Corinthian Gulf, the Agios Nikolaos–Aigio car ferry crosses to the Peloponnese.

Getting around

Recommended. Buses link Athens with Thebes, Livadia and Arachova, but Hosios Loukas monastery, the Parnassos ski resort, Delphi and the villages of Mount Helicon are much easier to combine by car.
