About Kavala

Kavala is the prefecture on the northern Aegean coast of eastern Macedonia, facing the island of Thasos, and its capital, Kavala, is one of the most attractive port cities in northern Greece. Built in an amphitheatre around a bay, the city is crowned by the old Panagia quarter on a rocky peninsula, with narrow lanes, colourful houses, a Byzantine castle with sweeping views and the Imaret, a vast Ottoman charitable foundation with domes and courtyards, now a hotel. Mehmet Ali, the founder of modern Egypt's ruling dynasty, was born here, and his house can be visited. A long sixteenth-century aqueduct, the Kamares, strides across the city centre, and grand tobacco warehouses recall the time when Kavala was a centre of the Oriental tobacco trade. Inland lies Philippi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, founded by Philip II of Macedon and later a Roman city, where the Apostle Paul preached and baptised Lydia, considered the first Christian in Europe; the site has a theatre, a forum and impressive basilicas. To the west and east of the city, sandy beaches such as Ammolofoi, with its dunes, Nea Peramos and Keramoti invite swimmers, and Keramoti is the short ferry crossing to Thasos. Kavala has an international airport and suits families, culture lovers and beach lovers.
