By air

Mytilene International Airport (Odysseas Elytis), about 8 km south of Mytilene, is about an hour and 15 minutes from Petra by road, and has flights from Athens and Thessaloniki all year and some direct summer flights from Europe.

The main port is Mytilene, about an hour and 15 minutes away, with ferries to Piraeus, Chios, Limnos, Kavala and Thessaloniki and boats to Ayvalik in Turkey. In summer, boat trips run along the north coast from nearby Molyvos.

Getting around

Recommended. Petra has a long beach and is a short walk or drive from Molyvos, but buses to Mytilene and the rest of the island are infrequent. A car lets you visit Eressos, the petrified forest and the hill villages.
