Transportation
Pyrgos Railway Station
By air
Araxos Airport, near Patras, has seasonal charter flights from Europe; otherwise the usual gateway is Athens International Airport, about three to three and a half hours away by motorway, or Kalamata Airport, about one and three-quarter hours.
By ferry
Kyllini, about 40 minutes from Pyrgos, is one of the main ports for the Ionian islands, with frequent ferries to Zakynthos, about one hour, and to Poros on Kefalonia. Patras, about an hour and a half north, has ferries to Italy.
Getting around
Recommended. Buses link Pyrgos with Ancient Olympia, Patras and Athens, but Ilia’s long sandy beaches, such as Kourouta, Kalogria and Kaiafas, the spa of Loutra Kyllinis and the inland villages are best reached by car.
