By air
Kalamata International Airport, with direct summer flights from Europe, is the nearest gateway, about an hour and a half from Areopoli; Athens International Airport, with flights all year, is about three and a half to four hours away by road.
By ferry
Gythio, the gateway to the Mani, has ferries to Kythira and to Kissamos on Crete on some days of the week. Neapoli, about two hours away, has daily ferries to Kythira and is close to the short crossing to Elafonisos.
Getting around
Essential. The Mani’s tower villages, such as Vathia and Areopoli, the Diros caves, Gerolimenas and Cape Tenaro are linked by a single winding coast road with very few buses. A car is the only practical way to explore.
