Lindos, on the east coast of Rhodes, is one of the most beautiful villages in Greece: a cascade of dazzling white cube houses at the foot of a rocky headland crowned by an ancient acropolis. Climbing the path through the village, on foot or traditionally by donkey, visitors reach the citadel, where the columns of the Temple of Athena Lindia, dating from the fourth century BC, stand within the walls of a castle of the Knights of St John, high above the turquoise sea. A relief of an ancient warship carved into the rock greets visitors at the entrance. The village itself is car-free, a maze of narrow, pebble-paved lanes with elegant sea captains' mansions from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, decorated courtyards with black-and-white pebble mosaics, roof-terrace restaurants and small shops. Below the village lie the sandy main beach and the small, almost enclosed St Paul's Bay, where, according to tradition, the Apostle Paul landed, now a favourite place for weddings. Lindos is very popular with day-trippers, so mornings and evenings are the most magical times to explore. It suits couples, families and culture lovers, and offers a romantic base for a holiday on the east coast of Rhodes.
